An O'Neil-Martin penalty and a Ball freekick earn Town first home win of the season.
With some 11players unavailable on saturday a win was needed to boost confidence after two heavy defeats in the last seven days.A few players returned for the back holiday fixture against Abbey Hey.
Just like saturday Town almost fell behind within the first minute a short freekick and a low cross from the right of the Town penalty area was met by Hey defender Soladomi whose close range shot was brilliantly parried away by Town keeper JOE MELLOR.
After that near miss Town dominated the majority of the half, Ball seemed to be clipped by Soladomi as he bore down on goal, appeals for a penalty were waved away. Two minutes later an O'Neil-Martin cross from the right was met by Ashton whose near post flick was cleared off the line by a defender.
Minutes later O'Neil-Martin fired just over the crossbar from 22yards after being set up by Thompson.Bristow and Sheldon whipped successive crosses into the visitor's six yard box which were scrambled clear. On 20minutes Thompson raced onto a Bristow clearance only to drag his 10yard angled shot inches wide of the post, minutes later Thompson dragged an 18yard shot under pressure just wide of the post seconds earlier Town keeper Mellor dived full length to parry away a low cross from the left.Bristow headed over from a Sheldon cross.Donaldson's 15yard half volley flew just over the crossbar after the Abbey Hey keeper failed to gather a Ball cross.
On 34minutes Hanley made the breakthrough a JOE DONALDSON cross to the back post towards TOM ASHTON who was pulled back as he got in front of the defender,Kartal O'Neil-Martin rifled home the resulting penalty. As the half drew to a close Ball run and shot down the right of the penalty was deflected away by a recovering defender with the keeper beaten and Sheldon's surging run ended with a Thompson 18yard shot brilliantly fingertipped over the crossbar by Abbey Hey keeper Heywood, from the resulting corner Higginbotham headed just wide.
Half-Time: Hanley Town 1 - 0 Abbey Hey
Hanley could rue those missed first half chances as Abbey Hey came out for the second having a lot of possession but Hanley's back four denied them any clear cut chances,O.Neil-Martin,Bristow,Higginbotham,Blowers all getting blocks and tackles in to deny the visitor's clear shots at goal.
Hanley made it two on 68minutes after a push on Nev Thompson and Kieran Ball curled a superb 30yard freekick into the top corner of the net.
Credit to Abbey Hey,they kept pressing to get back into the game but were denied by some solid Hanley defending. With two minutes remaining Abbey Hey's appeals for a penalty were waved away.
As the game moved into injury time Hanley two counter attacks saw Skellern to cut inside a defender but his 18yard shot was saved by Heywood and Skellern latched onto a clearance holding off a Abbey Hey defender before firing just over from the edge the penalty area.
